Now that we are moving to the FBS, the Triple Option needs to go period. We do not need to move towards other forms of the Triple Option, we just need to move on form it. Yes it was successful in the FCS and Big South especially, but that was against teams that you could run any kind of offense against and be successful. If you look at what has happened when we played teams with half decent defenses, we did not win. However, I agree that the cut clock rule change did not help. If we try to run any form of the Triple Option in Conference USA, we will have similar seasons as this one. No, we do not need to run a Pro style like everyone else. I think a very easy transition that we could make is to move to an RPO offense. Similar to Coastal Carolina and Georgia Southern (who has done pretty well at transitioning form the Triple Option). Running an RPO offense would help us significantly in maximizing the full potential we have to recruit some serious players. Which I think our recruiting potential will make this transition easier than other schools. Furthermore, I am split on Coach Bo staying. Yes, he has built this thing from nothing, and I believe he is made to build programs successfully. However, does he have what it takes, or the motivation to move away form the only offense he knows? I do not know. Part of me says no. However, Chestnut needs to go. He is a Triple Option FCS type caliber coordinator. It comes down to coach Bo being able to identify this weakness and make the necessary changes. My thoughts of the defense are the same as my thoughts for the offense. We can not go to the FBS with a high school coach as the defensive coordinator. Our defense is so bad and the scheme is so predictable. No mix of blitz's and only zone coverages. We need and can afford a higher caliber defensive coordinator who has the knowledge and imagination to run a mix of a 3-4 and 4-3 defense. That would further maximize our recruiting potential to recruit serious players that will allow us to run unique mixes of blitz packages and pass coverages. All and all, the path Overton needs to take is tough. If he wants to start over and move on to something new, then he just needs to clean house totally. I kind of feel like that is what needs to happen, but I am still a little split.
