Second half thoughts:
Longsnapper is hustling on punts. He's one of the first guys to ball every time. That's E.A.T.
I liked the UNLV type GO GO offense set we ran a few times in the 3rd quarter. it looked more like a strong I type pistol than the way I've seen UNLV do it but looked go-go-y anyway. That was an effective way to run the triple in short yardage. I think the outside RB being someone like Beynard could make that a scary look to defend. Don't know a ton about it, but have been meaning to try and watch some UNLV this year anyway. def will now that it looks like were trying to borrow from them a little schematically.
92 does a real good job pushing the pocket as a nose. Never noticed him in the run game, but if he two gaps like his size makes me assume he does, that's a valuable player.
Ashley has such great hands for a big back. I know it didn't count, but that bad pitch he got in stride was a SNAG. those are natural hands. He had a great game. I think he could be a real weapon as the dive man when we aren't playing against that beast UTSA had at nose.
That jet to wallace was nice. He looks like a weapon in space. not sure how our new WR's are blocking, but with him and beynard we could have a nice screen game. We need to find a way to feed those guys in space.
pass pro in the two minute drills was pretty good considering how little time we've had to flip that group from being flexbone linemen. Those UTSA edges look physically like they're going to more longer/stronger than we will see in CUSA and they weren't really getting home that fast when everyone knew it was a passing situation.
Defense never quit. It would have been so easy for them to be frustrated about the offense not scoring enough and turning the ball over when they went back out with like 2:30 left, but they just wanted to keep fighting. After feeling like that unit let frustration get the best of them and drop the effort late in games a few times last year, that was GREAT to see.
I'd like more designed qb run game without any options. Bryson looks really good on those designed draws. If we get him more carries without an option attached, maybe that helps him feel less pressure to do too much on his own in the option game.
Bryson does not do a good job of protecting the football. I'd like to see him be alot more conservative. I'm curious to see what we get from PFF now that were FBS, but if they track turnover worthy plays for us now, I bet it's going to be really high. I feel like it could have easily been a 4 interception game from him and that late pitch I praised Qua for snagging is not disciplined from Bryson. Both possessions late when it was hurry up time his first plays were nearly interceptions. The near interceptions feels like the same problem as the option game with him, he's just trying to do too much and not being okay with sailing the ball out of bounds or handing it to dive man and letting Ashley scratch and claw for a couple yards in traffic. Hopefully that's just him being young and inexperienced. I think we can defense and special teams our way into some upsets if we don't have turnovers.
Really strong performance. I feel alot better about this season, coach bo, and the move to fbs after seeing that.
edit: PFF only had it as 2 turnover worthy plays from Bryson passing. I might have been being a little harsh.
another note from a quick glance at PFF, we tackled really well. They don't grade us well rushing the passer, they don't grade us well defending the run, they don't grade us well in coverage. but looking at the tackling grades every player is green. That's E.A.T. Brat summer is over. E.A.T. fall is here.
