With the regular season ending soon I feel like the owls have enough talent to beat most teams in the CUSA tournament but after a 1-9 record against top 25 rpi teams I have a hard time seeing the owls get past DBU.

We aren't getting past DBU. The series against them went the way I thought it would, was hoping they might lose focus and slip up in a game, but with the regular season title on the line, it was just a dream. Can't beat a team like that when you're down two weekend starters and like two of your top relievers, would've been tough even at full health. Just wanna see us take care of business against MTSU and be competitive in the tourney. This was a successful first year in CUSA considering all the injuries we had.

BurialGround Totally agree. I think keeping the young talent we do have will be huge this offseason. Hopefully the BOR approves the athletics proposals so we can get better support for our athletes.

This team felt like they had a legit shot at an at large bid if they stayed healthier. The early season out of conference schedule didn’t go as well as you’d like but the boys climbed back to being in the discussion before DBU. Taking care of MTSU this weekend and locking up a top 3 seed would be a huge success in our first year. Then you’re playing with house money and who knows what happens in a conference tournament! Should be fun

After game 1 of the MTSU series I do wonder who the rotational starter might be outside of Pinson if Cain and Bayer continue to struggle.

With game one against FIU I think Cain should have a good outing like his 7 inning game when he first faced them. With Bayer struggling with walks my hope is if we face off with WKU in game 2 he can keep it close enough for one of Gold/Hardy/Powell to give us strong relief innings while the offense continues to roll.

Almost game time. Curious to see what we do with our pitching. We sit just 5 spots beneath WKU in RPI. Gotta think CUSA being ranked the fifth best conference makes it a 2-bid league. If we beat WKU again, we might have a chance to slip past them. Didn't think we'd be in this position after getting swept by DBU, but who knows.

Of course, the first game is all-important. We swept FIU during the regular season. They'll be out to get us.

Wingman

The tournament will come down to which team’s bull pen can perform over the course of the tournament. We’re not the favorite on paper, but I would never bet against the Owls who are always scrappy and can put runs on the board.

Looking like it's good to be two and done for us this tourney. FIU came out motivated, wanting to get us back for sweeping them, and we didn't look up to the challenge. The 5th inning was a back-breaker, as we loaded the bases with no outs and didn't score.

Hope we put up some fight in game 2, but we're gonna have to play a lot better than that.

It felt like a bunch of our midweek games where the pitching couldn't throw strikes and poor execution when we had runners on 3rd with less than 2 outs. I think we might want to consider swapping Williams and Chirello in the order going forward.

Wingman

The Owls survived their elimination game. The bats came alive and got 10 runs on the board including burst of 5 in the seventh inning. Harry Cain pitched well in relief. There would have been nothing worse than to be the first team eliminated, so I am glad we let New Mexico State have that title.
We get FIU again (revenge game), Friday at 2 PM Eastern - a break from morning ball.

It was nice not to be two and out on the tournament. I hope we can at least get past FIU in the next game, but beating WKU twice in a row will be a tall task if we do.

Given how many arms we used in the first two games I really don't know who we use in game 3. I am guessing Gold and Pinson would be available which could work out for the owls given how well they have pitched recently.

Wingman

Smith Pinson delivered a complete game shutout to advance the Owls to the semifinals. After that game I am feeling better about our chances tomorrow.

The good news is Smith Pinson pitched a complete game and saved all our other arms for a day. The bad news is we won't have Smith Pinson.

Maybe we can throw everything and the kitchen sink at WKU for the next two games. If we get our RPI into the 40s and have a 4-1 record against them, can we sneak an at-large bid? Probably not, but I hope we can pull it off and give ourselves a chance. Credit to these guys for battling back after losing the first game.

WKU looked ready today. The Owls had a great season given the injuries and looked like the 2nd best team in the conference most of the year. I will be interested to see if CUSA baseball has a similar offseason to basketball where most of the best players end up going to the portal if they are not drafted.

It was fun following the Owls this season and during the tournament. I am looking forward to the opening of our new stadium. I hope the food service there will be an updated for Stillwell.

College baseball doesn't have the same amount of money in it as football and basketball, I don't think there's quite the same risk of everyone jumping to the portal, and regardless I feel pretty good about Coach Coe's ability to keep a roster together. The problem is that we're gonna lose a lot of production in our senior class this offseason, Coe and staff are gonna have their work cut out for them in replacing these guys and having a team that can compete for an NCAA spot next year. Hopefully the new stadium gets done and starts paying dividends in recruiting (and in encouraging more people to come to games), it's gonna be nice having a stadium that actually looks like it belongs in D1.

After thinking through the roster I do like that outside of 1st base we are bringing back plenty of experience. I think Bradfield and Brown could really develop with more ABs which would be huge given the 40 home runs graduating. Pitching should be better. The real question will be what happens at catcher with potentially six on the roster for next year. I feel we might need to look into an experienced bat again for DH/1B but that is all I could think of for portal needs.

I did not expect us to lose Rhudy after the portal had been open but he was a heck of an owl while we had him.
