I enjoyed the fight, energy and quality play the owls showed in conference play this year. There were some rough patches, particularly when Covid related pauses caused make up games, resulting in 3 games week. That took its toll and hurt the win-loss record, I can’t judge the players or coaches too harshly for some of those losses arising from difficult circumstances.
As I watched it seemed the Owls lost more than their share of the close ones, so I reviewed the results of this year’s conference regular season.
Owls record for:
Overtime games 0-2
Games decided by 3 pts or less 1-2
Games decided by 6 pts or less 2-3
Games decided by 7 pts or more 4-2
Looking at the first 3 categories the owls were 3-7 in games which after 40 mins there was a difference of 2 or fewer possessions.
If the Owls had won half of the close games, they would be .500 in the conference.
What could be improved? The stat the caught my eye was the owls are last in the conference in Free Throw %, knocking in only 62.4% from the stripe.
It seems this year the ASUN is a league where anyone can beat anyone so I am looking forward to an exciting conference tourney.
