College basketball insider Jeff Goodman reports that Kennesaw State has interviewed Antoine Pettway for the job vacated when Amir Abdur-Rahim left for South Florida. Pettway is an assistant at Alabama, his alma mater. Bama was the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament. It finished 31-6, losing to San Diego State in the Sweet 16.
Alabama hired Nate Oats in 2019, three days after firing Avery Johnson. Over four seasons, Oats has become a model – the successful mid-major coach who brings his ways to a major and makes them work. Oats’ method is to play fast. In his final season at Buffalo, Oats’ Bulls ranked No. 11 nationally in tempo, per KenPom. His Bama teams have ranked fourth, 11th, 11th and fourth.
Not coincidentally, Oats has lost two of his three assistants. Georgia Southern hired Charlie Henry as head coach; Arkansas State hired Bryan Hodgson. Not coincidentally, KSU athletic director Milton Overton worked at Alabama as associate AD from 2009 through 2015.
