2025 Basketball Offseason

GO-OW15

The only other players I can see leaving are Clemmons, Turner, and McKenzie due to a lack of playing time. Without Weir 2 bigs would be ideal if we could pull it off but I am worried that we may try and go for experienced guards and end up with another Wright scenario.

GO-OW15 You're 2/3 so far!

Mekhi Turner - F & Ricky Mckenzie - G hit the portal. Wonder if they decided to leave or if were encouraged. Brings our total scholarship players down to 11 total scholarship players. 4 open spots, expecting to grow to 5 with Weir likely gone. That's a lot of spots to fill. Curious how this new scholarship and roster limit will work and if Pettway keeps any of the walkons going into this year.

Chad Moodie out of Alabama A&M might be a good pick up with the Grayson HS connection. Solid numbers plus KSU can offer 2 years of eligibility at a higher level closer to home.

I'd like to see fan favorite Charles Stone get a scholarship. He's a real "student-athlete" as opposed to many college athletes these days. Pettway was a walk on who later earned a scholarship and I hope he pays it forward.

GO-OW15

Former Owls target Micah Smith from Georgia Southern might be an interesting depth piece to pick up. Kory Mincy from Presbyterian with 15ppg along with 36% 3pt shooting and the Cottle connection could be another.

Kasen Jennings is in the portal. He did say, however, that he is "open to returning to USF".

ETA: USF announced their new coach 5 days ago. Today there are 10 USF players in the portal. I just checked Arkansas State (where Bryon Hodgson coached) and there are 6 players in the portal with 4 of them going to USF. Welcome to the current state of college basketball.

Robert Morris won the Horizon League Championship and as a 15 seed lost to 2 seed Alabama in the tourney.

All 5 starters from that team are in the portal.

GO-OW15

Josh Hill played at Arkansas state this season and was a solid big out of wheeler high school. Now that he is in the portal and not already committed to USF maybe Pettway will make a move. I am impressed the owls have so few looking to leave and I think that speaks to Pettway and the culture the owls have.

Josh Hill shot 26.8% from 3 last year. He'd fit right in! 🙂

GO-OW15

bb_fan Pretty crazy how bad we were this year at 3s. I can only hope that we spend a ton of time this offseason working on it.

GO-OW15 Hire Masterson as a shooting coach!

Kmase14

GO-OW15 pretty crazy how bad we were when Pettway’s offense is built to shoot 3s. We can only hope that besides big men, he picks up a shooter or 2 in the portal.

I read where Wooley had narrowed it down to Alabama, Auburn, Louisville, and Kansas. Elite company there. What a signing by Pettway, let's hope he can do it again.

Kmase14

Wooley to Louisville feels weird. They must have dropped a BAG for him. Thought Alabama/Auburn was a lock.

GO-OW15

Kmase14 I am beginning to think Oats may be headed somewhere else since I really thought going home was the only real option for Wooley.

Kmase14

GO-OW15 he just landed a center out of the portal, so idk.

Question: with basketball going up to allow 15 scholarship players, if they fill them on the men’s team, women’s athletics would need to get the same amount of scholarship dollars. So, if a college doesn't fill all available scholarship spots, they wouldn’t have to on the women’s side? I.E. a school could have a policy where they only fill 90% of their scholarships. I’d think many smaller schools will begin to implement this with the increase in scholarships? Thinking it’s doubtful we fill all 15 spots with scholarships.

GO-OW15

Kmase14 I expect both rosters to be under the 15 limit but with the bulk of our funds coming from student fees it is hard to figure out what we can do with the roster size changes since we should have money with more students.

BurialGround

I doubt there's anything more to it than Louisville offered the biggest bag.

GO-OW15

The Simpson addition makes me hopeful that we might see more players added sooner rather than later.
