Overton just got a $44,000 raise and now makes $301,000 a year and was extended thru 2028. Also gets a bonus of $21,000 for basically doing his job and an additional bonus of $10,00 if the football or basketball teams win their conference championship (that one may be tough). I chose the wrong career.
From the MDJ: After speculation regarding the expiration of his previous contract at the end of June, Kennesaw State extended the contract of athletic director Milton Overton through 2028.
The university has not announced Overton’s extension, but the agreement was verified by the Marietta Daily Journal and the Sentinel, Kennesaw State’s student-run newspaper, following an initial report by Hoot State, a fan-run website covering Owls athletics.
The extension consists of three consecutive one-year terms between July 1 and June 30 from 2025-28. Each term is set to be renewed, provided Overton fully complies with the terms and conditions of the agreement.
The agreement includes a raise of $44,300, with Overton’s base annual salary increasing from $257,000 in 2024-25 to $301,300 in each of the contracted years.
Incentives for Overton include a payout amount equal to 7% of his base salary, or and additional $21,091, if all of Kennesaw State’s teams achieve an academic progress rate of 950, or if the university receives an athletic revenue increase of $1 million.
Overton would also receive a $10,000 bonus if any of Kennesaw State’s football, men’s basketball or women’s basketball teams win their respective conference championships, provided there are no pending investigations via the NCAA or Conference USA.
Overton, a former Oklahoma football player, has been the athletic director since being hired from the same position at Florida A&M in December 2017. During his tenure, he has guided Kennesaw State’s move from the ASUN Conference to Conference USA, as well as the football program’s move from the Football Championship Subdivision to the Football Bowl Subdivision.
Overton has also overseen the hiring of new coaches in three of the university’s full-scholarship sports, including two men’s basketball coaches — Amir Abdur-Rahim and Antoine Pettway — women’s basketball coach Octavia Blue and first-year football coach Jerry Mack.
Overton’s agreement was reached following a period of confusion among supporters of Kennesaw State athletics caused by the expiration of his previous agreement June 30 and the university’s lack of a statement.
The deal was signed by all parties July 14, implying Overton may have been working without a contract for two weeks.
