The NIT gives a big middle finger to mid majors by ending the guaranteed bid to regular season conference winners who do not win their conference championship.
Instead, they will guarantee 2 bids to each Power 6 conference team with the highest NET ranking that did not receive a bid to the NCAA tourney.
For example; last year 8 teams (!) from the Big 10 made the tourney. Of the 6 teams that did not make the tourney, 2 of them are guaranteed a spot in the NIT. Last year this would have included Ohio State which fininhed 13th in the 14 team league with a 5-15 conference record.
Ridiculous.
